XP helps you level up (durrr), and comes in the form of large purple crystals. You can obtain XP through completing quests and shooting purple blossoms (these spawn as often as amber-giving mushrooms, and have a 50% chance of giving you XP). Leveling up gives you amber, self-satisfaction, and something to boast about, if you're the type to boast.
